Marcus Smart is headed to Washington in a 3-team trade.
Veteran guard Marcus Smart has been traded to the Washington Wizards in a three-team deal with the Memphis Grizzlies and Sacramento Kings, the teams announced after Thursday’s trade deadline.
Wizards get:
- Colby Jones (via Kings)
- Alex Len (via Kings)
- Marcus Smart (via Grizzlies)
- 2025 first-round pick (via Grizzlies)
Grizzlies get:
- Marvin Bagley III (from Wizards)
- Johnny Davis (from Wizards)
- 2025 second-round pick (via Wizards)
- 2028 second-round pick (via Kings)
Kings get:
- Jake LaRavia (via Grizzlies)
Smart won Kia Defensive Player of the Year with the Boston Celtics during the 2021-22 season. He joined Memphis last offseason and posted averages of 8.7 points, 3.7 assists and 1.2 steals in 21.1 minutes over 19 games this season.
This move helps clear up some much-needed cap space for Memphis with Smart counting $20.2 million this season and $21.6 million next season, according to Spotrac.
Smart returned Wednesday night for just his 19th game this season. He played 18 minutes, missing all six of his shots. He had been out with an injury to his right index finger that kept him out of 22 games. Before that, he missed a game with a sore left shoulder, four in November because of an illness and six games at the start of the season with a sprained right ankle.
LaRavia, the 19th overall pick in the 2022 NBA Draft, is averaging 7.3 points, 4.4 rebounds and 2.8 assists during his third NBA season.
Bagley III, the No. 2 overall pick in the 2018 Draft, joins his third team over the last two seasons. He’s averaging a career-low 4.3 points and 2.9 rebounds over 19 games this season.
Len, the fifth overall pick in the 2013 Draft, has played with Sacramento for the last three-plus seasons. He and Jones, the 34th pick in the 2023 Draft, have played limited roles so far this season.
