Pete Maravich (1947)
“Pistol Pete” is one of the greatest players in NBA history. This revolutionary point guard tipped off his career as the third overall pick in the 1970 NBA Draft by the Atlanta Hawks. Maravich was a star immediately, averaging 23.2 points while finishing third in Rookie of the Year voting. That was the start of a magical run for Maravich, who made five All-Star appearances over the next eight seasons.
More importantly, Maravich received MVP votes five times, finishing third in voting in the 1977 season with the New Orleans Jazz. In that standoutout campaign, Maravich led the league with 31.1 points, 5.1 rebounds and 5.4 assists per game. Maravich closed his career with one-year stints in Utah and Boston before officially retiring in 1980. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1987, averaging 24.2 points, 4.2 rebounds and 5.4 assists throughout his 10-year career.
Clyde Drexler (1962)
“Clyde the Glide” was an All-American at Houston University, earning him the 14th overall pick in the 1983 NBA Draft. He immediately became a Portland Trail Blazers legend after that draft pick, finishing 22nd in MVP voting in his second season. Drexler followed that up with his first All-Star appearance in 1986, marking his first of 10 All-Star appearances in total. He was also All-NBA five times, receiving MVP votes seven separate seasons. Drexler actually finished second in MVP voting in 1992 before closing out his Portland career in 1994.
He went on to join the Houston Rockets and helped them win a title in 1995. He played his final four years with the Rockets before officially retiring in 1998, and was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2004. Throughout his 15-year career, he averaged 20.4 points, 6.1 rebounds, 5.6 assists, and 2.0 steals.
