Bob Cousy is among the players born on August 9.
With over 5,000 players in NBA history, at least one player was born on every day of the calendar year – including four leap day ballers. Our day-by-day breakdown of the players born on each day of the year continues.
Below are the most notable NBA players born on August 9.
Bob Cousy (1928)
Cousy was a foundational player in the NBA who still stands today as one of the all-time greats both in league and in Celtics history. His professional career got off to an unconventional start after refusing to report to the Tri-Cities Blackhawks, then joining a soon-to-be-defunct Chicago Stags club. In the ensuing dispersal draft, Cousy finally landed where he belonged in Boston.
Once he found his footing in Boston, Cousy became a star. He was an All-Star for each of his 13 seasons with the Celtics and an All-NBA performer in 12 of those years. Cousy took down MVP in 1957, which was also one of eight consecutive seasons as the league’s assist leader. Not coincidentally, that was also the year Bill Russell joined the Celtics and the franchise won the first of 11 championships in a 13-year span. Cousy’s storied career led to him being included on the NBA’s 75th anniversary team.
