NBA birthdays: Players born on August 5

With a player born on each day, our birthday series continues with the NBA players born on August 5.

Anthony Edwards is among the players born on August 5.

With over 5,000 players in NBA history, at least one player was born on every day of the calendar year – including four leap day ballers. Our day-by-day breakdown of the players born on each day of the year continues.

Below are the most notable NBA players born on August 5.

Anthony Edwards (2001)

Whether it’s dropping 40 or throwing down the poster dunk of the season, Edwards is one of the most exciting players in the league. The Timberwolves took the Georgia product with the top pick in the 2020 NBA Draft, and Edwards rewarded them by finishing second in Rookie of the Year voting. That standout rookie year was merely a sign of things to come, though.

Ant-Man has made three All-Star appearances since then, along with a pair of top-7 finishes in MVP voting. Edwards continues to improve, having had a career year in 2025 with 27.6 points, 5.7 rebounds, 4.5 assists, and 1.2 steals per game. Edwards has been more than just a statistical standout, though. He has become the face of the franchise and led the Wolves to back-to-back Western Conference finals appearances before turning 24.

Patrick Ewing (1962)

Ewing is considered one of the greatest centers in NBA history. The big man was a force at Georgetown before being selected first overall in the 1985 NBA Draft by the New York Knicks. Ewing made a home in New York, spending his first 15 seasons in the Blue and Orange. He kick-started his career with a Rookie of the Year award in his debut campaign while making his first of 11 All-Star appearances.

It only took a few years for Ewing to become a full-blown superstar as he finished Top 5 in MVP voting six times between 1988 and 1995. He also finished in the top seven in Defensive Player of the Year voting five times during that span, while finishing All-NBA in six of those. The big man is the franchise leader in points scored, minutes played, rebounds, steals and blocks. Ewing averaged 21 points, 9.8 rebounds, 1.9 assists, 1.0 steals and 2.4 blocks per game over his Hall of Fame career.
