With over 5,000 players in NBA history, at least one player was born on every day of the calendar year – including four leap-day ballers. Our day-by-day breakdown of the players born on each day of the year continues.
Below are the most notable NBA players born on August 6.
David Robinson (1965)
“The Admiral” is one of the best all-around players in NBA history. The Navy grad was the top pick in the 1987 NBA Draft by the Spurs. After serving his first two years after the draft, Robinson won Rookie of the Year in the 1989-90 season. That wasn’t any run of the mill rookie season, though, as Robinson also finished sixth in MVP voting. That was the start of a truly dominant career that made him a franchise legend. The big man finished Top 5 in Defensive Player of the Year voting nine times, and took down that award in the 1991-92 season.
Robinson won MVP in the 1994-1995 season after leading the league with 29.8 points per game the previous year. Most importantly, Robinson helped the Spurs become a perennial contender, contributing to their titles in 1999 and 2003. He spent his full 14-year career with the Spurs, averaging 21.1 points, 10.6 rebounds, 2.5 assists, 1.4 steals and 3.0 blocks per game. Robinson is also one of four players in NBA history to record a quadruple-double, collecting 34 points, 10 rebounds, 10 assists and 10 blocks on February 17, 1994. That lengthy resume earned Robinson a Hall of Fame induction in 2009.
Dale Ellis (1960)
Ellis was another big-time contributor born on August 6. The small forward was selected ninth overall in the 1983 NBA Draft by the Dallas Mavericks, but really took his game to another level when he joined the Seattle SuperSonics in 1986. After playing sparingly in Dallas, Ellis started in Seattle and averaged 24.9 points, 5.5 rebounds, 2.9 assists and 1.3 steals en route to a Most Improved Player award in his debut campaign with Seattle.
That was a standard stat line over the next four seasons, with Ellis making his first All-Star appearance two years later. In that career year, Ellis averaged 27.5 points, 4.2 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 1.3 steals while finishing Third-Team All-NBA. He spent time with the Milwaukee Bucks, San Antonio Spurs, Denver Nuggets and Charlotte Hornets before officially retiring in 2000. Ellis averaged 15.7 points, 3.5 rebounds, 1.4 assists and 0.8 steals throughout his 17-year career.
