San Antonio Spurs single-season points per game leaders

Let's dig into the greatest scoring seasons in Spurs franchise history.

George Gervin was the back-to-back single season PPG leader for San Antonio.

The Spurs have a long history, spanning 50 years as an NBA franchise that was preceded by nine seasons as part of the ABA. Several elite scorers have donned the silver and black, but only two will appear here. Here’s a closer look at the Spurs’ top five single season points per game leaders.

George Gervin – 1980, 33.1 PPG

When you think of the all-time great Spurs, more recent names may come to mind first, but Gervin was as talented as any. The “Iceman” was dominant through the late 70’s and early 80’s and piqued as a scorer during the 1979-80 season. He set a career high and led the league, posting 33.1 points per game. He would also earn First-Team All-NBA, while getting his fourth-straight NBA All-Star nod. Gervin would also finish third in MVP voting, behind winner Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Julius Erving.

George Gervin – 1982, 32.3 PPG

The NBA scoring crown would be Gervin’s again in ‘82, when he edged out Moses Malone for the top mark, with 32.3 points per game. This was the fourth and final time that Gervin would lead the league in scoring. He was named to the NBA All-Star team for a sixth-straight season and earned First-Team All-NBA honors. Gervin would also add 5.0 rebounds, 2.4 assists, and 1.0 steals per game to the stat sheet this season.

David Robinson – 1994, 29.8 PPG

The 1993-94 season was a big one for Robinson, who led the league with 29.8 points per game. Part of his scoring success came from averaging an NBA-best 11.6 free-throw attempts and 8.7 makes per game. He also dished out a career-high 4.8 assists, managing to grab 10.7 per contest. Robinson’s campaign had him in the mix during award season, finishing second in MVP and Defensive Player of the Year voting, behind Hakeem Olajuwon in both categories. He would also earn Second-Team All-NBA and All-Defense honors.

George Gervin – 1979, 29.6 PPG

Gervin’s 29.6 points per game in 78-79 were a career high at the time, and also earned him his second NBA scoring crown. He would also lead the Association in field-goal attempts, with 21.9 per game, while shooting 54.1% from the floor. Aside from lighting up the scoreboard, Gervin would add 5.0 rebounds, 2.7 assists, and 1.7 steals per game to the ledger. His efforts were once again recognized during award season with a second-place finish in MVP voting and another First-Team All-NBA spot.

David Robinson – 1995, 27.6 PPG

Robinson followed up his 93-94 campaign with an equally impressive performance. Although he finished third in the scoring race with 27.6 points per game, he was vital to the Spurs’ success throughout a 62-win season. His efforts earned him the league’s MVP award, as well as First-Team All-NBA and All-Defense, as well as his sixth All-Star nod. His 8.1 made free throws led the Association, while he finished top 5 in blocks and top 10 in rebounds per game.
