Allen Iverson owns five of the nine highest-scoring individual seasons in the history of the 76ers.
The Philadelphia 76ers have had the luxury of having some of the greatest scorers in the history of this sport play for their franchise. Some players hail from the early days, while others are recent (and current) stars, but the scoring talent has always been there in Philadelphia. Here we’ll take a look at the best five individual seasons for 76ers players in the category of points per game in a single season.
Wilt Chamberlain – 1966, 33.5 PPG
Chamberlain was the league’s most dominant scorer in the 1960s, which is backed up by his seven scoring titles throughout an accolade-filled 14-year career in the NBA. He spent four of those seasons with Philadelphia, averaging 27.6 points per game across 277 regular-season contests. His best season came in 1965-66, when he won the MVP award after leading the NBA in both points (33.5) and rebounds (24.6) per game. Even though that was Chamberlain’s seventh-best season in his career from a scoring perspective, it remains the best scoring output ever for a 76ers player in the history of the organization.
Joel Embiid – 2023, 33.1 PPG
Embiid led the NBA in scoring in the 2022-23 season and also won the MVP award after putting up a career-high 33.1 points across 34.6 minutes per game in 66 regular-season contests. He was far more than just a scoring machine, however, as Embiid also averaged 10.2 rebounds, 4.2 assists and 1.7 blocks per contest. Embiid led the NBA in scoring that season ahead of players such as Luka Dončić (32.4 ppg), Damian Lillard (32.2 ppg), Shai Gilgeous-Alexander (31.4 ppg) and Giannis Antetokounmpo (31.1 ppg).
Allen Iverson – 2006, 33.0 PPG
Iverson was the undisputed face of the franchise for the 76ers between the late 1990s and early 2000s. However, he delivered the best per-game scoring output of his career in the 2005-06 campaign. “The Answer” averaged a career-high 33.0 points per game that season, although he ranked second in the league in that category behind Kobe Bryant, who scored 35.4 points per contest. Iverson has been so important for the 76ers that he owns five of the nine highest-scoring individual seasons in the history of the organization.
Allen Iverson – 2002, 31.4 PPG
Iverson’s second-best season-long scoring output as a member of the 76ers came in the 2001-02 campaign. He led the 76ers to a 43-39 regular-season record that year, but the star guard led The Association in scoring with his 31.4 points per game. He did it by a landslide, though, as the second-placed player in that list was Shaquille O’Neal, who “only” averaged 27.2 points per game. Paul Pierce (26.1 ppg), Tracy McGrady (25.6 ppg) and Tim Duncan (25.5 ppg) rounded out the top five.
Allen Iverson – 2001, 31.1 PPG
Iverson also surpassed the 31-point-per-game mark in the 2000-21 campaign, when he averaged 31.1 points per contest while leading the 76ers to a 56-26 record in the regular season. Iverson led the NBA in scoring that year and was the only player who surpassed the barrier of 30 points per game — a feat he achieved four times as a member of the 76ers. During that 2000-01 season, Iverson led the league in scoring ahead of Jerry Stackhouse (29.8 ppg), Shaquille O’Neal (28.7 ppg), Kobe Bryant (28.5 ppg) and Vince Carter (27.6 ppg).
That season was arguably Iverson’s most notable as he led the 76ers to the NBA Finals against the Lakers.
