NBA Fantasy Power Rankings Week 1: Wemby is back

RotoWire highlights the top performers from Week 1 of fantasy basketball.

Victor Wembanyama leads the league in total fantasy points through week 1.

A memorable start to the season replete with multiple overtime clashes and wire-to-wire battles also featured plenty of explosive individual performances by a very familiar group of standouts. From Victor Wembanyama looking like he’s fully arrived and ready to take over the mantle of league MVP to the most recent recipient of that award putting his team on his shoulders through a pair of marathon victories, there’s no shortage of fantasy-friendly efforts to dive into.

The following players averaged the most fantasy points per game last week (two-game minimum):

#1. Victor Wembanyama, Spurs

Last Week: 75.2 FP/G Season Rank: 1 (75.2 FP/G)

Wemby offered no shortage of glimpses of his massive upside over his first two seasons, but if the first three games of his third campaign are any indication, this is the year when it all comes together at the expense of the rest of the league. The dominant big man was otherworldly while leading the Spurs to a 3-0 record, averaging 33.3 points, 13.3 rebounds, 2.3 assists, 1.7 steals, and a whopping 6.0 blocks. He even shot 36.4% from behind the arc for good measure, and he capped off his week by becoming the first player in league history to score 100 points and record 18 blocks through the first three games of a season.

#2. Luka Dončić, Lakers

Last Week: 74.1 FP/G Season Rank: 2 (74.1 FP/G)

Luka is now sidelined to start Week 2 due to a finger sprain and leg contusion, injuries that were part of the collateral damage endured from an arduous season-opening two-game span where the star guard averaged 38 minutes per contest while serving as the main cog in the Lakers’ engine with LeBron James (back) sidelined to open the season. Dončić put up an eye-popping 46.0 points over that first pair of contests, adding 11.5 rebounds, 8.5 assists and 1.0 steals while shooting a blistering 62.0% overall. Dončić totaled 52 shot attempts in the sample as well, and if he’s back on the floor in about a week as projected, he’ll likely still be operating with LeBron for at least a handful of additional games.

#3. Giannis Antetokounmpo, Bucks

Last Week: 67.7 FP/G Season Rank: 3 (67.7 FP/G)

Giannis may have been somewhat overshadowed by Wemby and Luka’s exploits, but the Greek Freak had quite the start to the new campaign himself. Playing alongside new frontcourt mate Myles Turner and without the departed Damian Lillard, Antetokounmpo was back to serving as the focal point of Milwaukee’s attack and posted a massive 36.1% usage rate on his way to averages of 36.0 points, 16.0 rebounds, 7.0 assists, and 1.0 blocks across 32.7 minutes per contest. He helped his cause considerably by shooting 68.3% overall, including 66.7% on his small sample of six 3-point attempts.

#4. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Thunder

Last Week: 61.4 FP/G Season Rank: 4 (61.4 FP/G)

The reigning MVP and his teammates had no chance to rest on their 2024-25 laurels, as they got their opponents’ best shot right out of the gate over the first two games. Back-to-back double-overtime marathon wins over the Rockets and Packers helped Gilgeous-Alexander to averages of 40.0 points, 6.0 rebounds, 5.0 assists, 1.7 steals and 1.3 blocks during his three-game week, giving him one of the most well-rounded stat lines in the league to start the season. Making his offensive numbers all the more remarkable is that the star guard’s 3-point shot hasn’t even gotten the memo the season started – he drained just 22.7% of his attempts from deep over the first three contests.

#5. Austin Reaves, Lakers

Last Week: 59.0 FP/G Season Rank: 5 (59.0 FP/G)

Doncic’s aforementioned pair of injuries and upcoming multi-game absence paired with LeBron’s continued lack of availability due to his back injuries could well vault Reaves to the top of these rankings by this time next week, if his first game without both stars is any indication. The fifth-year guard hung 51 points, 11 rebounds, nine assists and two steals across 39 minutes against the Kings on Sunday – the first game of Doncic’s absence – and he’d already put together an impressive first two games alongside Luka in which Reaves averaged 25.5 points, 10.0 assists, 6.0 rebounds and 1.0 steals. Reaves has flashed elite efficiency as well (56.6% shooting, including 45.0% 3-point shooting), and if he remains in the neighborhood of the 35.0% usage he generated versus Sacramento, he should be in line for a prolific Week 2.
