Jerry Lucas (1940)
Lucas was the sixth overall pick in the 1962 NBA Draft by the Cincinnati Royals but didn’t debut until 1963. His first season was a standout one, though, as the Ohio State product won Rookie of the Year. He also finished ninth in MVP voting that year, averaging 17.7 points and 17.4 rebounds in one of the greatest rookie seasons in NBA history. That was no fluke, though, with “Mr Memory” making seven All-Star appearances in total.
Lucas also finished All-NBA five times, averaging a career-best 21.5 points and 21.1 rebounds in 1966. He joined the San Francisco Warriors in 1969 and made his final All-Star appearance the following season. Lucas closed his career by playing for the New York Knicks for three years before officially retiring in 1974. He did win a title with the Knicks in 1973 and was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1980. The big man averaged 17 points and 15.6 rebounds throughout his 11-year career, with that rebounding total ranking fourth in NBA history.
