Fred VanVleet, Rockets agree to 2-year, $50 million deal

Houston and guard Fred VanVleet have agreed to a reported $50 million deal that keeps him from entering free agency next summer.

Last season, Fred VanVleet averaged 14.1 points and 5.6 assists per game for Houston.

The Rockets continued their run of early moves in the offseason by keeping guard Fred VanVleet in the fold a bit longer.

Per multiple reports, VanVleet and the Rockets have agreed to a two-year, $50 million extension. VanVleet had a team option for next summer, but this contract will keep him with the team until 2026-27. The new deal will include a player option, per reports.

Houston pulled off one of the bigger moves of the summer earlier this week when it reportedly agreed to a trade to bring 15-time All-Star Kevin Durant to town from Phoenix. Aside from that move, the Rockets also signed center Steven Adams to a reported three-year, $39 million extension. Earlier in June, coach Ime Udoka reportedly agreed to a contract extension as well.

VanVleet has spent the last two seasons with Houston and averaged 14.1 points, 3.7 rebounds, 5.6 assists and 1.6 steals per game in 60 games last season while shooting 37.8% overall and 34.5% on 3-pointers.

The new deal gives Houston added flexibility in free agency in 2026 and, per ESPN’s Shams Charania, both sides believe in a partnership for years to come beyond the current two-year pact.

The Rockets, who won just 42 games combined in the two seasons before Udoka was hired, went 41-41 in his first season before going 52-30 this season, their first winning record since 2019-20. Houston lost to the Golden State Warriors in seven games in the first round of the playoffs this season.
