With three appearances in the top five Alonzo Mourning headlines our single season blocks per game leaders for the Charlotte Hornets.
The Charlotte Hornets franchise was established in 1988. Despite their limited time in the NBA, they have seen some stellar production in terms of blocks. Here are their top five all-time single season leaders in blocks per game.
Alonzo Mourning – 1993, 3.5 BPG
The Hornets selected Mourning with the second pick in the 1992 Draft. He started all 78 games that he played during his rookie season, averaging 34 minutes. He made an immediate impact, averaging 21.0 points, 10.3 rebounds and 3.5 blocks per game. That helped him finish second in the Rookie of the Year voting behind Shaquille O’Neal.
Alonzo Mourning – 1994, 3.1 BPG
Mourning made his first career All-Star team in 1993-94, averaging 21.5 points and 10.2 rebounds. His average of 3.1 blocks per game was the fourth-highest mark in the league. However, after playing in 78 games his rookie season, Mourning appeared in just 60 games in 1993-94.
Alonzo Mourning – 1995, 2.9 BPG
The 1994-95 season would end up being Mourning’s final campaign with the Hornets. He went out in style, averaging 21.3 points, 9.9 rebounds and 2.9 blocks. He made the All-Star team again and finished sixth in the Defensive Player of the Year voting. Following the season, he was traded to the Heat. Over 215 regular season games with the Hornets, Mourning averaged 21.3 points, 10.1 rebounds and 3.2 blocks. Mourning eventually led the league in blocks per game two times and won two Defensive Player of the Year awards with the Heat. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2014.
Emeka Okafor – 2007, 2.6 BPG
When the Charlotte franchise was known as the Bobcats, they selected Okafor with the second pick in the 2004 Draft. In his first season, he averaged 15.1 points, 10.9 rebounds and 1.7 blocks on his way to winning the Rookie of the Year award. Injuries limited Okafor to just 26 games the following season, but he averaged 35 minutes across 67 games in 2006-07. That helped him average 2.6 blocks, which would end up being the highest mark of his career. Okafor also averaged 11.3 rebounds to help him finish 11th in Defensive Player of the Year voting. Okafor played five seasons for the Charlotte franchise, averaging 14.0 points, 10.7 rebounds and 1.9 blocks over 330 games.
Vlade Divac – 1997, 2.2 BPG
Divac spent the first seven seasons of his career with the Lakers. He averaged at least 1.5 blocks per game in four of them. Divac was eventually traded to the Hornets for Kobe Bryant. The 1996-97 season was Divac’s first with the Hornets and he averaged 12.6 points, 9.0 rebounds, 3.7 assists and 2.2 blocks per game. Divac wound up playing just two seasons for the Hornets, averaging 11.7 points, 8.6 rebounds, 3.3 assists and 1.9 blocks over 145 games. He then played six seasons with the Kings before finishing up his career by playing one more season with the Lakers.
