Rick Carlisle says T.J. McConnell (hamstring) is out at least 1 month

Indiana's backup point guard left in the second quarter of Tuesday's NBA preseason game against the Timberwolves.

Veteran T.J. McConnell averaged 9.1 points and 4.4 assists last season in 79 games.

Pacers backup guard T.J. McConnell will miss at least a month due to a hamstring injury he suffered in Indiana’s first preseason game, coach Rick Carlisle said Thursday.

McConnell sustained his injury during Tuesday night’s preseason game against the Minnesota Timberwolves.

The veteran point guard and consummate sparkplug left in the second quarter of Tuesday’s NBA preseason game against the Timberwolves in Minnesota. McConnell averaged 9.1 points and 4.4 assists per game last season and he led the NBA in total assists off the bench with 348. He averaged 9.5 points and 4.0 assists per game off the bench and also had the most total assists of the bench of any player in the playoffs with 93.

He becomes even more important this season as the Pacers are already missing All-Star point guard Tyrese Haliburton, out for the season with an Achilles tendon tear, so having him out for the season puts the Pacers in a serious bind.

The Pacers open the regular season on Oct. 23 against the Thunder in a rematch of the NBA Finals.
