Stephen Curry passes Jerry West, pioneers new feat with 52-point, 5-steal night

Stephen Curry passes a legend on the NBA all-time scoring list while posting an unprecedented stat line in the process.

Stephen Curry scores 52 points and passes Jerry West on the all-time scoring list in the process.

Stephen Curry scored 52 points, including 12 3-pointers, to pass Jerry West for 25th on the NBA all-time scoring list while making additional entries in the record books along the way in Golden State’s 134-125 win over Memphis on Tuesday night.

Already the league’s all-time leader in made 3-pointers, Curry now joins the top 25 scorers in NBA history. Reggie Miller, whom Curry passed on in all-time 3s made in 2021, is next up on the all-time scoring list at No. 24. Alex English, Vince Carter, Kevin Garnett and Russell Westbrook round out the 20-through-25 group.

“I got a little emotional about that,” Curry said of passing West. “It was special. In his memory. What he meant to our organization, the league, to the world of basketball. … That’s the logo.”

Curry was unstoppable in the first half, hitting his first five shots, including four from outside the arc. He had 32 points in the half, going 11-for-16 from the field and 8-for-10 outside the arc. After Curry’s last 3-pointer in the half, coach Steve Kerr just turned and shook his head in disbelief.

Overall, Curry made 12 of his 20 shots from distance, the dozen 3-pointers matching his season high. He becomes the first player in NBA history to register at least 50 points, 10 3-pointers and five steals in a single game.

“Fifty-two points with people draped all over him, all game long,” Kerr said, later adding: “I’ve been watching this for 11 years, and actually longer before I became his coach. … You get a real sense of just the magnitude of his talent.

The Warriors superstar and four-time NBA champion also passed LeBron James (active) and Rick Barry (retired) and is now tied with Damian Lillard (active) for the sixth-most career 50-point games in NBA history (15).

Curry’s performance was as necessary for the Warriors as it was spectacular for the fans. The win allowed Golden State to overtake Memphis for fifth place in the Western Conference standings. Finishing that high would mark the Warriors’ best placement in the West since 2022, when Curry led them to their most recent NBA championship.
