The New Orleans Pelicans franchise was established in 2002. One player has dominated their record books in terms of blocks. Let’s highlight the franchise’s top five single-season blocks per game leaders.
Anthony Davis – 2015, 2.9 BPG
When the Pelicans franchise was known as the New Orleans Hornets, they selected Davis with the first pick in the 2012 Draft. He finished second in Rookie of the Year voting in his first season and immediately showed his defensive prowess by averaging 1.8 blocks over 29 minutes per game. In the 2014-15 season, Davis averaged 36 minutes, resulting in him leading the NBA in blocks, averaging 2.9 blocks per game, while averaging 24.4 points, 10.2 rebounds and 1.5 steals that season. Davis made the All-Star team, was named All-NBA First Team, finished fourth in Defensive Player of the Year voting and fifth in MVP voting that season.
Anthony Davis – 2014, 2.8 BPG
With his average of 2.8 blocks per game in 2013-14, Davis led the league in blocks per game for the first time in his career. That season, he also averaged 20.8 points, 10.0 rebounds and 1.3 steals while making his first career All-Star team. Davis also finished eighth in Defensive Player of the Year voting.
Anthony Davis – 2018, 2.6 BPG
Davis appeared in 75 games and averaged 36 minutes during the 2017-18 season. He once again led the league in blocks with 2.6 of them per game. He also averaged 28.1 points per game, which has been the highest mark of his career. Combine that with his averages of 11.1 rebounds and 1.5 steals and Davis made the All-Star team, finished third in Defensive Player of the Year voting and came in third in MVP voting.
Anthony Davis, 2017 – 2.2 BPG
While Davis did not lead the league in blocks during the 2016-17 season, he once again was a defensive wizard with 2.2 blocks per game. He also averaged 28.0 points while leading the league in field goals made per game at 10.3. Davis also averaged 11.8 rebounds on his way to be named All-NBA First Team for the second time in his career.
Davis would eventually spend the first seven seasons of his career with New Orleans before being traded to the Lakers. Across 466 regular-season games with New Orleans, he averaged 23.7 points, 10.5 rebounds, 2.4 blocks and 1.4 steals. He made six All-Star teams, was named All-NBA First Team three times and finished inside the top five in MVP voting two times.
Anthony Davis, 2016 – 2.0 BPG
After leading the league in blocks per game in back-to-back seasons, Davis averaged 2.0 blocks during the 2015-16 season. He was great across the board, with averages of 24.3 points, 10.3 rebounds and 1.3 steals. He made the All-Star team and finished ninth in Defensive Player of the Year voting.
