Danny Fortson (1976)
A solid player with a great nickname, the “Big Daddy from Cincinnati” is a great player to highlight for today’s birthdays. This big man was the 10th overall pick in the 1997 NBA Draft by the Milwaukee Bucks. A draft day trade sent him to the Denver Nuggets, with Fortson playing his first two years in the Mile High City. He joined the Boston Celtics in 1999, but he had a career year when he was traded to the Golden State Warriors the following year.
Fortson averaged 16.7 points and 16.3 rebounds in limited time and parlayed that into a starting gig the following season. He had a one-year stint with the Dallas Mavericks after that in 2003 before closing his career with the Seattle SuperSonics. Fortson played his final three seasons in Seattle, officially retiring in 2007. Fortson also led the league in offensive rebounds in 1999, establishing himself as one of the best hustlers at a 6’7” big man.
