Rick Adelman (1946)

Adelman was selected 79th overall in the 1968 NBA Draft by the San Diego Rockets. He spent just two seasons in San Diego but really broke out in his third year with the Portland Trail Blazers. Adelman averaged 12.6 points, 3.5 rebounds and 4.7 assists in that career year. The point guard spent time with Chicago, New Orleans and Kansas City before ending his playing career in 1975.

That was just the start of Adelman’s NBA journey, which continued as he spent the next 30 years as a coach. Adelman was an assistant for the Portland Trail Blazers for six seasons before becoming their head coach in 1989. He coached them to two Western Conference titles in two of his first four seasons and recorded at least 47 wins in five years. Adelman spent two years as the Golden State Warriors’ head coach after that and then started an eight-year stint with the Sacramento Kings in 1998. He closed his coaching career with a four-year stint with the Houston Rockets and then a three-year stint with the Minnesota Timberwolves before officially retiring in 2014. Adelman is one of 10 coaches in NBA history with over 1,000 wins (1,042 victories).
