Chuck Hayes (1983)
On a light day for birthdays, let’s showcase a big man who carved out a solid 11-year career in the NBA. Despite going undrafted out of Kentucky University, Hayes was signed by the Houston Rockets in 2005. That proved to be a solid signing because he spent the first six years of his career there, recording averages of 4.4 points, 5.8 rebounds, 1.3 assists and 0.9 steals per game. Hayes’ best season in Houston came in 2010-11, finishing 12th in Defensive Player of the Year voting after averaging 7.9 ppg, 8.1 rpg, 2.7 apg, 1.1 spg and 0.7 bpg.
Hayes spent time with the Sacramento Kings and Toronto Raptors after that before officially retiring with the Rockets in 2016. That showed just how much he meant to that organization, and he carried that over into a management role. Hayes took over as the Director of Basketball Operations for the Golden State Warriors in 2023 and still holds that role today.
