Sweet 16, Day One

The NCAA tourney takes a few days off to let the players recharge and the coaches break down their upcoming opponents, but it comes back Thursday with a bang.

Big win for Bama, big opponent ahead

Alabama nailed 11 3s and rolled over No. 5 seed Texas Tech 90-65 Sunday night, setting up a Sweet 16 matchup with Michigan, the top seed in the Midwest.

Crimson Tide rolls into Sweet 16

Alabama closed out the second round with a breezy rout of Texas Tech. Latrell Wrightsell scored 24 points and knocked down 6 3s in the win.

Next up for Bama: Michigan, the No. 1 seed in the Midwest.

Huskies in the hunt for history

They’ve won the national title twice in the last three years, and they’re absolutely a threat to do it again. The UConn Huskies served notice by easily handling UCLA on Sunday night, and Alex Karaban fueled the win by scoring 27 points.

Next up? A date with the Michigan State Spartans.

Alex Karaban lifts UConn over UCLA

Two-time national champion Alex Karaban scored 27 points on 9-for-16 shooting, and UConn overpowered UCLA 73-57 to move into the Sweet 16.

UConn will next play against No. 3 seed Michigan State.

Bradley big when Arizona needs him most

Big 12 Player of the Year Jaden Bradley started slow, but he found his offense in the second half to lead Arizona past Utah State 78-66.

The No. 4 seed Crimson Tide are up big on No. 5 seed Texas Tech. Alabama leads 49-25 at halftime, and the Crimson Tide have knocked down 11 3-pointers.

Top seed Arizona moves on

The Wildcats handled their business in the West region Sunday by defeating a competitive No. 9 seed Utah State 78-66. Jaden Bradley scored 18 points and Brayden Burries added 16 for Arizona. Arizona will face No. 4 seed Arkansas in the Sweet 16.

It’s a shot that will live in Iowa history forever.

Alvaro Folgueiras knocked down a clutch 3 with just 4.5 seconds left on Sunday and Iowa defeated defending champion Florida for a berth in the Sweet 16.

No. 2 seed UConn has shot 12-for-26 from the floor and 6-for-14 from 3 en route to a 38-33 halftime lead over UCLA.

Alex Karaban has a team-high 11 points for the Huskies.

The No. 1 seeded Gators got one last opportunity after Iowa’s Alvaro Folgueiras nailed a clutch 3 in crunch time, but they couldn’t come through with a game-winning play.

The champs are gone

Iowa delivered the shock of the tournament by knocking out the No. 1 seed in the South region, the defending champion Florida Gators. Alvaro Folgueiras nailed a 3 in the waning seconds to give Iowa a 73-72 lead.

The Gators couldn’t answer, sending Iowa through to a berth in the Sweet 16.

The Tennessee Volunteers are celebrating their fourth straight trip to the Sweet 16 after beating Virginia in the second round on Sunday. Ja’Kobi Gillespie scored 21 points and Tennessee managed to hit some clutch foul shots down the stretch.

Koa Peat has a game-high 11 points and the No. 1 seed Arizona Wildcats were able to weather a tough shooting half to take a 33-24 lead against Utah State. Arizona is just 9-for-31 in the first half, and Utah State has shot 1-for-12 from 3-point land.

St. John’s point guard Dylan Darling picked a perfect time to score his first basket of the game, converting a driving layup as time expired to lift his team to a 67-65 victory over Kansas on Sunday.

Tennessee leads tight Midwest region battle

The 6-seeded Volunteers got a combined 16 points and nine assists from their starting guards Bishop Boswell and Ja’Kobi Gillespie in the first half as they opened up a 36-31 lead over the 3-seeded Cavaliers.

The Red Storm took a 34-26 lead into halftime behind seven made threes and a 9-2 run to close the half.

Cyclones defense stifles Wildcats in second half

While without its second-leading scorer and top rebounder Joshua Jefferson, Iowa State brought the intensity and forced 20 Kentucky turnovers en route to an 82-63 win, sending the Cyclones to their third Sweet 16 under head coach T.J. Otzelberger.

While the Cyclones led by just a point at halftime, they came out of the locker room full-throttle and pulled away from 7-seeded Kentucky in the final half for a 19-point win.

No. 2 seed Iowa State hadn’t led 7-seeded Kentucky since it was 2-0, but thanks to a last-second corner three and an 8-0 run, the Cyclones nabbed a 31-30 halftime lead over the Wildcats.

Fletcher Loyer led the way for the Boilermakers with 24 points as they advanced to the Sweet 16 for the third straight time and seventh in the last nine years.
