Recap: 2026 Salt Lake City Summer League, Day 1 | Darryn Peterson, Cameron Boozer debut with wins

Darryn Peterson and the Utah Jazz defeated the Atlanta Hawks in overtime to open their Salt Lake City Summer League schedule.

Welcome to the Salt Lake City Summer League, which features Utah, Atlanta, Memphis and Oklahoma City and runs through Tuesday.

No. 3 pick Cameron Boozer (15 pts, 4 reb, 4 ast) led a Grizzlies victory in his debut Saturday, while No. 2 pick Darryn Peterson (28 pts, 4 3PM) helped the Jazz take home an overtime win over the Hawks.

Jazz win 103-102

Darryn Peterson (28 pts on 11-for-21 shooting, 4 3PM, 2 blk) led the way for the Jazz as they held off the Hawks and earned their first win of the summer.

“It was fun to be out here,” said Peterson. “It felt great… This is what I love to do.”

Cody Williams (17 pts), Max Abmas (15 pts) and Justin Harmon (15 pts) also chipped in for Utah, which shot 55.6% from the field and earned a 60-36 advantage in points in the paint.

Asa Newell (15 pts) and Gabe Madsen (15 pts) were the top scorers for Atlanta, cued by Kingston Flemings (14 pts, 9 ast).

Harmon with the hoop and the harm

Justin Harmon (15 pts) just slashed to the rim for an and-one layup off the out-of-bounds play, giving the Jazz a 103-99 lead with less than a second remaining, sending a roar through the Salt Lake City crowd.

Overtime in Salt Lake City

Max Abmas (15 pts) drew a foul on a running jumper, then knocked down two free throws to square the game at 95.

On the other end, Kingston Flemings (12 pts, 8 ast) missed a tough jumper, sending us to an extra period.

Hawks take the lead

95-93 Atlanta with 17.5 to go, as the Hawks have rallied in the fourth quarter, surging into the lead with a late 9-0 run.

Gabe Madsen (12 pts) hit a 3-pointer to push Atlanta over the top.

Cody crams one

Cody Williams just strode to the hoop and slammed down a one-handed poster, using every bit of his his 7-foot-1 wingspan.

Jazz up 78-70 after three

Darryn Peterson (18 pts in 18:46, 2 blk) leads five double-figure scorers for the Jazz, out-dueling Kingston Flemings (10 pts, 6 ast), who’s found his footing over the course of the game.

Utah has a 46-22 lead in points in the paint, but Atlanta’s forced 18 Jazz turnovers to stay in the contest.

Abmas goes aerial

Max Abmas (11 pts) delivered a clean strip and breakaway slam for the Jazz, who have a 70-63 lead with 2:58 to go in the third quarter.

The 5-foot-11 Abmas is one of 12 players to score 3,000+ points in NCAA Division I men’s college basketball history, starring for Texas and Oral Roberts.

Utah’s shooting 59.6% from the field, while Atlanta’s at 37.5%, but the contest remains close.

The guard got his feet together comfortably here, showing his coordination as he fired away from deep.

Jazz up 49-43 at the half

Darryn Peterson (10 pts) is attacking early, leading all scorers as the Jazz earn a halftime lead over the Hawks.

Cody Williams (8 pts) and Ace Bailey (6 pts, 4 reb) also had moments, as Utah develops a trio of top-10 picks.

“One, two, we’re just going,” said Bailey of his budding connection with Peterson.

No. 8 pick Kingston Flemings (3 pts, 5 ast) is looking for his shot, but moved the ball with precision to rally the Hawks, who trailed by as many as 16.

Darryn with the deft touch

Peterson (10 pts on 4-for-7 shooting) just converted a difficult floater, fading to his right towards the baseline in transition and tossing it home. Eye-catching body control from the rookie.

“That is a bucket. Wow, wow,” said Craig Bolerjack.

“That is just straight-up balling,” said Thurl Bailey.

Utah’s led throughout, as Darryn Peterson (8 pts) gets it rolling for the first time.

Darryn Peterson (5 pts) sliced to the rim to open his pro scoring tally, showing some explosiveness in front of the fans in Utah.

Hawks-Jazz sees two top-10 guards debut

Kingston Flemings, the No. 8 pick out of Houston, leads an Atlanta squad that also features Asa Newell, the 23rd pick in the 2025 NBA Draft and No. 23 pick Zuby Ejiofor, the reigning Big East Defensive Player of the Year.

On the Jazz side, No. 2 pick Darryn Peterson will begin to build chemistry with Ace Bailey, the No. 5 pick in the 2025 NBA Draft, and Cody Williams, who went No. 10 in 2024.

Blake Hinson also flashed for the Jazz last season, including scoring a career-high 30 points late in the regular season.

Cameron Boozer (15 pts on 7-for-11 shooting, 4 reb, 4 ast) led a balanced attack as the Grizzlies controlled their Salt Lake City Summer League opener over the Thunder.

“Competitors,” said Boozer of his teammates. “Just keep working, keep gelling, and we’re going to be great.”

Olivier Maxence-Prosper (17 pts, 5 reb, 2 3PM, +38) was the top scorer for Memphis, while Taylor Hendricks (15 pts), Jahmai Mashack (12 pts, 1 stl, 2 blk), Cedric Coward (11 pts, 8 reb, 3 3PM), Javon Small (11 pts, 9 ast) and Carson Cooper (11 pts, 5 reb) joined him in double figures.

Memphis shot 17-for-33 (51.5%) from 3-point range, leading by as many as 41 in the victory.

Payton Sandfort (13 pts, 2 3PM) and Brooks Barnhizer (13 pts, 6 reb) led Oklahoma City in scoring.

Stirtz with the shake

Bennett Stirtz (10 pts, 2 3PM) just lost Cedric Coward by drifting back into deep 3-point range, then drilling the long ball.

The 6-foot-4 guard, who played at Missouri State, Drake and Iowa in college, is comfortable keeping a live dribble while changing pace, bobbing and weaving with his defender.

Memphis has five scorers in double figures, showing off their depth as they enter Summer League play.

They’re 13-for-27 (48.1%) from 3-point range so far, dominating the Thunder.

Responding with an oop of their own

Aday Mara (8 pts, 3 reb, 2 ast, 1 blk) just jammed an alley-oop thrown by Anthony Pritchard, who made a play in his first 22 seconds of action.

Grizzlies up 76-50 with 3:59 to go in the third.

Ooping the alley

Carson Cooper (6 pts, 3 reb, 3 ast) just slammed down a poster alley-oop on a lob from Javon Small (9 pts, 8 ast), as the Grizzlies continue to roll.

“That’s just great timing,” said Thurl Bailey. “Great timing.”

Cooper, a graduate of Michigan State University, is on a two-way contract with the Grizzlies.

Memphis up 66-44 at the half

The Grizzlies are roaring, led by Taylor Hendricks (15 pts, 4 reb, 3 ast) and Cameron Boozer (11 pts, 3 reb, 4 ast), as they surge out over Oklahoma City.

They led by as many as 23 in the half, going 12-for-20 (60%) from 3-point range while delivering fluid offense.

Brooks Barnhizer (11 pts, 4 reb) is the top scorer for the Thunder, while Otega Oweh (4 pts) flashed late in the second quarter.

‘Grateful, and just pure excitement’

Cedric Coward (9 pts, 4 reb, 3 3PM) has showed the form that made him a standout for the Grizzlies last season.

He missed last year’s Summer League with an injury, but is thrilled to be out there, as explained by Lauren Green of Smith Entertainment Group.

Grizzlies up 33-22 after one

Taylor Hendricks (11 pts), Javon Small (9 pts) and Cameron Boozer (7 pts) are spurring Memphis so far, as they open up a lead in the Jon M. Huntsman Center in Salt Lake City.

Bennett Stirtz (5 pts) and Aday Mara (2 pts) are getting going for Oklahoma City.

Hendricks gets hot

Taylor Hendricks (10 pts), formerly of the Jazz, put up five straight points to keep the Grizzlies ahead, tossed his second dime of the contest, then scored again, flashing his game.

Hendricks put up 10.2 ppg in 34 games for Memphis after being included in the deal that sent Jaren Jackson Jr. to Utah.

30-22 Grizzlies with 31.7 to go in the quarter.

Boozer, Grizzlies rolling early

16-6 Memphis with 6:40 to go in the first quarter, as Cameron Boozer (7 pts, 1 reb, 1 ast) nails a 26-foot 3-pointer to send us to a timeout.

The rookie also nailed a turnaround jumper a few possessions ago, showing his polish and all-around game. He’s 3-for-4 from the field.

Cameron Boozer (2 pts) finished over the 7-foot-3 Aday Mara to open his pro scoring tally, moving the ball underneath the rim and delivering on the return pass.

Grizzlies-Thunder opens the league

The Memphis roster is deep and talented, highlighted by No. 3 pick Boozer, NBA All-Rookie First Team member Cedric Coward, No. 21 pick Karim López and NBA veterans Walter Clayton Jr., Olivier-Maxence Prosper, Javon Small, Jahmai Mashack and Taylor Hendricks.

On the Oklahoma City side, No. 16 pick Bennett Stirtz, one of the most accomplished pick-and-roll operators in college basketball last season, should run the show, accompanied by No. 12 pick Aday Mara, talented scorer Otega Oweh, sharpshooter Buddy Boeheim and defensive ace Brooks Barnhizer.
