Grizzlies' Ja Morant (calf strain) expected to miss at least 2 weeks

Memphis' star guard missed only 2 games so far this season before suffering this injury.

Ja Morant is averaging 17.9 ppg, 3.5 rpg and 7.6 apg this season.

Memphis Grizzlies star Ja Morant will be out of the lineup for at least another two weeks with a Grade 1 right calf strain, the team announced Monday.

Morant last played on Friday vs. Cleveland, scoring seven points in six minutes before exiting with right calf soreness. He missed the previous game on Wednesday in Boston with a sore right ankle.

Grizzlies coach Tuomas Iisalo said Morant was injured Nov. 11 in a loss at New York. Morant played 34 minutes in that game, finishing with 16 points and 10 assists.

Morant appeared in five straight games following a one-game suspension on Nov. 2 at Toronto for what the Grizzlies said was conduct detrimental to the team.

Morant, a two-time All-Star, is averaging 17.9 points, 3.5 rebounds and 7.6 assists per game this season while shooting a career-worst 35.9% overall and 16.7% on 3-pointers. The Grizzlies have (4-10) have lost four straight games and play six of their next eight games on the road.

The Grizzlies just got center Zach Edey back in the game against Cleveland. Memphis started the season with a handful of players out injured, including shooting guard Ty Jerome (high-grade right calf strain), guard Scotty Pippen Jr. (left big toe) and Brandon Clarke (knee surgery).

Memphis’ thin guard depth prompted the Grizzlies to sign rookie Jahmai Mashack to a two-way contract Sunday. He was the 59th overall pick in the June draft and has been playing with the Memphis Hustle in the NBA G League.
