Pre-Draft Outlook
The Spurs are a modern-day model of team building through the draft, and it helps to be both good at scouting and lucky in the lottery. With the exception of De’Aaron Fox, the top players in the rotation are home grown. Once again, the Spurs — thanks to the Atlanta Hawks — own a top-20 pick, and even though they’re a contending team and should be for years to come with Victor Wembanyama, another highly-regarded young player certainly can’t hurt.
The Way to Go
Because of their lofty place in the NBA power pecking order, the Spurs don’t need immediate help. In that sense, it would seem wise for them to take a chance on Jayden Quaintance, the 6-foot-10 forward who only played four games last season for Kentucky while dealing with knee surgery. They can put him in their very respected player development program and watch him grow without any pressure or urgency; he’s just 18 years old.
