
Luka Dončić leads the way for the Dallas Mavericks single season points per game stat category.
The Dallas Mavericks have had their fair share of electric scorers, but one player in particularly stands out above the rest. Let’s dive into the top five single-season point scorers in the history of the Mavericks.
1. Luka Dončić, 2023-24, 33.9 Points Per Game
Selected third overall by the Mavericks in the 2018 NBA Draft, Dončić recorded four of the best five scoring seasons for the franchise before being traded to the Los Angeles Lakers. His best campaign occurred in 2023-24, when he averaged 33.9 points over 70 games. He led the league in scoring that season and finished third in MVP voting. Dončić also averaged a career-high 38 minutes per game that season.
2. Luka Dončić, 2022-23, 32.4 Points Per Game
In terms of efficiency, Dončić’s best performance came in 2022-23 when he shot 49.6% from the field on his way to averaging 32.4 points per game. That was the second best mark in the league behind Joel Embiid’s average of 33.1 points per contest. In addition to his scoring prowess, Dončić averaged 8.6 rebounds, 8.0 assists and 1.4 steals in what would be his second to last full season with Dallas.
3. Mark Aguirre, 1983-84, 29.5 Points Per Game
The Mavericks selected Aguirre with the first pick in the 1981 NBA Draft and he averaged 18.7 points during his rookie season. After that, he put up at least 22.6 points per contest in each of his next six seasons. Aguirre’s best performance came in 1983-84, when he averaged 29.5 points across 79 games. He shot a career-high 52.4% from the field that season, and only Adrian Dantley (30.6) fared better in the scoring column during the campaign. Aguirre made the Western Conference All-Star team in 1984, something he accomplished three times in his career. Across 566 career appearances with the Mavericks, Aguirre averaged 24.6 points – a mark that trails only Dončić and Kyrie Irving in team history.
4. Luka Dončić, 2019-20, 28.8 Points Per Game
We’re back to Dončić, who was named Rookie of the Year Award for the 2018-19 season. The following season, he averaged 28.8 points and made his first All-Star team. He finished sixth in the league in scoring and fourth in MVP voting. It was also the first season that Dončić was named First Team All-NBA. Besides providing a glimpse of what was to come in the scoring column, Dončić averaged 9.4 rebounds and 8.8 assists.
5. Luka Dončić, 2021-22, 28.4 Points Per Game
Dončić’s average of 28.4 points ranked third in the NBA during the 2021-22 season, right behind Joel Embiid (30.6) and Giannis Antetokounmpo (29.9). Dončić also provided 9.1 rebounds and 8.7 assists, which helped him finish fifth in MVP voting. All in all, Doncic averaged 28.6 points over his 422 games with the Mavericks – a mark that leads all other players in franchise history by 3.1 points.
