Redefining the Mavericks

See how Dallas has found a new identity through the ups and downs of their season and may end up where they planned to be all along.

Anthony Davis’ return has sparked a resurgence for the Mavericks as they aim for a postseason push.

When you look up the definition of a Maverick, you might find that it refers to an unbranded range animal, fitting for a team rooted in Dallas and symbolized by the stallion in their logo. You may also find that it describes an independent-minded person or unconventional thinker who disregards others’ opinions when making decisions.

This season, the Mavericks have truly embraced the latter meaning of “Maverick.” Under the leadership of general manager Nico Harrison, the team made bold moves, including the trade of franchise cornerstone Luka Dončić. While the trade surprised many, it’s clear the Mavericks are building a new team identity around fresh talent and a revamped roster, positioning themselves for a bright future.

Though the season started with unexpected challenges, including the injury setbacks to key players like Anthony Davis, Dereck Lively II, and Daniel Gafford, Dallas has remained resilient. The Mavericks found themselves in a tough spot, but instead of falling apart, they dug deep. Despite the adversity, they went 4-5 over their next nine games, showing the grit and determination that defines this team.

The turning point came on March 24 when Davis made his return. The Mavericks defeated the Brooklyn Nets by 19 points, signaling the start of a positive shift. Since Davis’ return, the team has gone 4-1, showing the chemistry and potential of their new-look roster. With Lively II and Gafford also returning to action, the Mavericks now boast one of the most formidable frontlines in the NBA, ready to make a strong push for the postseason.

In addition to the strong roster moves, the Mavericks have embraced a shift in their style of play. While they were once known for their three-point shooting, they’ve adapted to a more balanced approach, focusing on high-percentage scoring opportunities in the paint. This change has already begun to yield positive results, and as the team continues to gel, they’re proving to be a more versatile and dangerous opponent.

Heading into the final 10 days of the regular season, the Mavs sit at No. 9 in the West. If the season ended today, they’d host the 10th-seeded Kings in a Play-In game, with an opportunity to win one additional Play-In game to punch their ticket to the playoffs. The Mavericks are poised to prove they’re a force to be reckoned with, and their recent resurgence shows that they’re more than capable of taking on the challenge.

In what could have been a turbulent season, the Mavs have embraced their new identity and turned adversity into opportunity. With a fresh face of the franchise and a roster that’s beginning to click, they’re trending upward at the right time, with their playoff hopes still very much alive.

See the Anthony Davis-led Mavericks in action again Friday at 10:30 ET against the Clippers on NBA League Pass.
