Patrick Ewing – 1990, 4.0 blocks per game
Only 16 times has a player averaged 4.0 or more blocks per game in a season, and Ewing lays claim to one of those seasons. The 7-footer finished behind only Hakeem Olajuwon as the shot-blocking leader that season while also averaging a career best 28.6 points per game. Ewing’s impressive production on both ends of the floor led to him being named First Team All NBA and he finished fifth in MVP voting as well.
Patrick Ewing – 1989, 3.5 blocks per game
Ewing’s shot-blocking peak may have come the following season, but his rim protection was established among the best in the league in 1989. He finished third in the league behind two of the best shot blockers of that generation, as Manute Bol swatted 4.3 shots per game and the NBA’s No.4 shot blocker of all time, Mark Eaton, blocked 3.8 per game. Ewing was named to his third of 11 All-Star teams that season.
Patrick Ewing – 1991, 3.2 blocks per game
Ewing’s reign as one of the best shot blockers in the league continued into 1991 when he rejected 3.2 shots per contest. He had one of his four career nine-block games that year on January 23 against the Jazz in a 109-94 victory. Ewing finished behind only Hakeem Olajuwon (3.9) and David Robinson (3.9) in blocks per game that season.
Patrick Ewing – 1988, 3.0 blocks per game
Ewing won Rookie of the Year and earned an All-Star nod in 1986 but he reached another level of stardom in the 1988 campaign. It was his first of five seasons averaging at least 3.0 blocks per game. He did that while also establishing a new career high in points per game (20.2) at the time, though he would later surpass that mark 11 more times. Ewing’s best shot-blocking outing that season came on Jan. 23 when he swatted eight shots against the Kings.
Patrick Ewing – 1992, 3.0 blocks per game
Ewing’s sustained dominance carried into the 1992 season when he notched another season with at least 3.0 blocks per game. He was also rebounding at an elite level that season with 11.2 RPG, which ranked top 10 and would end up as his second-best rebounding season. Ewing’s 3.0 BPG ranked in a tie for third behind David Robinson and Hakeem Olajuwon.
