Shawn Marion (1978): Marion is one of the most underappreciated players over the last 25 years. This two-way stud started his career when he was selected ninth overall in the 1999 NBA Draft by the Phoenix Suns. The small forward really broke out in his sophomore season, finishing 11th in Defensive Player of the Year voting. “The Matrix” recorded his first All-Star appearance two years later and then became a bona fide star in 2004. That was Marion’s first of three straight All-Star appearances, finishing Top 10 in Defensive Player of the Year voting in all of those while receiving MVP votes in two of them as well.
His final season with the Suns was in 2007, spending the next three years between Miami and Toronto. Marion found another home when he joined the Dallas Mavericks in 2009, spending five of his final six seasons with that organization. He also received Defensive Player of the Year votes in two of those before officially retiring in 2015 with the Cleveland Cavaliers. In total, Marion made four All-Star appearances and two All-NBA teams while receiving Defensive Player of the Year votes seven times. He averaged 15.2 points, 8.7 rebounds, 1.9 assists, 1.5 steals and 1.1 blocks throughout his 16-year career.
