NBA Birthdays: Players born on March 22

With a player born on each day, our birthday series continues with the NBA players born on March 22.

Marcus Camby is among players born on March 22.

With over 5,000 players in NBA history, at least one player was born on every day of the calendar year – including three leap day ballers. Our day-by-day breakdown of the players born on each day of the year continues.

Below are the most notable NBA players born on March 22.

Ed Macauley (1928)

Ed Macauley was one of the best players in the NBA during the 1950s. It all started when he was selected fifth overall in the 1949 NBA Draft by the St. Louis Bombers. He played one season with the Bombers before spending the next six seasons with the Boston Celtics.

Macauley became a stud during his time in Boston, making six straight All-Star appearances from 1950 to 1956. He was also First-Team All-NBA in the first three of those, making his final All-Star appearance in his debut season with the St. Louis Hawks in 1957. Macauley helped the Hawks win a title in 1958 before officially calling it quits the following year. He averaged 17.5 points, 7.5 rebounds and 3.2 assists throughout his 10-year career, earning a Hall of Fame induction in 1960.

Marcus Camby (1974)

Marcus Camby played 17 seasons in the NBA and materialized as one of the best defensive players during his era. He was the second overall pick in the 1996 NBA Draft by the Toronto Raptors, where Camby played just two seasons before really breaking out when he joined the New York Knicks in 1998. He averaged a double-double in 2001 and 2002, a major reason why the Denver Nuggets acquired him the following year.

Camby’s defensive presence took over in Denver, as he finished top-5 in Defensive Player of the Year voting four times over the next six seasons. The big man took home that award in 2007, and led the league in blocks in 2006, 2007 and 2008. Camby closed his career by playing for the Los Angeles Clippers, Portland Trail Blazers, Houston Rockets and Knicks again before retiring in 2013. Throughout his 17-year career, Camby averaged 9.5 points, 9.8 rebounds, 1.9 assists, 1.0 steals and 2.4 blocks per game. He’s also 12th all-time with 2,331 career blocks.
