Former 76ers owner Harold Katz passes away at age 87

The businessman and entrepreneur owned the franchise from 1981-96 and helped deliver a championship in 1983.

Former Philadelphia 76ers owner Harold Katz has died at age 87, the team announced on Saturday.

“It is with great sadness that we share the loss of Harold Katz, who owned the Philadelphia 76ers from 1981-96,” the team said in a statement. “He was a successful businessman and entrepreneur who helped deliver an NBA title to our city and fans in 1983. We send our condolences to Harold’s family and friends.”

Katz purchased the franchise from Fitz Eugene Dixon Jr. in 1981. He was the founder of Nutrisystem weight-loss products and services.
