Between the Bounces
Artist: Cierra Boyd
Between the Bounces captures a basketball player frozen in the quiet moment of motion that exists before the highlight — the work, repetition, and discipline that shape the game. The figure is constructed using recycled sneakers layered over a mannequin form, while the head is replaced by a basketball made entirely from sneaker materials and laces.
By removing facial identity, the sculpture represents every player rather than one individual. The basketball head symbolizes a mindset shaped by repetition, focus, and muscle memory, where the game becomes both thought and instinct. Each sneaker used carries its own history of movement, wear, and effort, transforming discarded materials into a record of labor.
This piece reflects the unseen moments between plays — the dribbles, practices, and quiet dedication that often go unnoticed. Between the Bounces invites viewers to reconsider both basketball culture and sustainability, highlighting how value, meaning, and beauty can emerge from what is worn, overlooked, or left behind.
