SAN FRANCISCO — The Miami Heat defeated the San Antonio Spurs, 82-69, in the California Classic Summer League at Chase Center on Saturday.

Neither team led by more than six points until the fourth quarter. There were four ties and 16 lead changes up to that point, but Miami outscored San Antonio 26-18 in that final frame. That allowed them to maintain the lead for the closing 15 minutes.

Defense was key to the Heat winning the turnover battle 17-10 while out-blocking the Spurs 9-4. Miami shot 37% from the field, 21% from 3-point range and 80% from the free throw line while holding San Antonio to 33% from the field, 19% from long range and 77% from the charity stripe. The Heat starters outscored the Spurs starters, 48-28.

The Heat (1-0) were led by Pelle Larsson, who provided 18 points and three rebounds. Erik Stevenson led the bench with 16 points, five rebounds and three assists. Kel’el Ware collected 14 points, seven rebounds, two steals and three blocks.

The Spurs (0-1) were led by David Jones Garcia, who tallied 18 points and seven rebounds. The other four starters combined for 10 points and three assists on 4-for-20 shooting. Jameer Nelson Jr. led the bench with 13 points and five assists.

Both of these teams will play again on Sunday, with Miami matching up with the Los Angeles Lakers and San Antonio squaring off with the Golden State Warriors.
