Get to Know Mikel Brown Jr.

Mikel Brown Jr. sits down with Lauren Green from NBA TV to discuss the NBA Draft.

Overview
Mikel Brown was a five-star prospect, McDonald’s All-American and Nike Hoop Summit participant before heading to Louisville. The top-ranked point guard in the Class of 2025, Brown lived up to the billing as a freshman, earning a spot on the ACC All-Rookie Team and a third-team All-ACC selection. When healthy, Brown was one of the most dynamic freshmen in the nation, highlighted by a 45-point eruption against NC State that set both the Louisville program and ACC freshman single-game scoring records. However, he missed eight games in the middle of the season due to a back injury and was sidelined for the final six contests when the issue flared up again, including the ACC and NCAA Tournaments. Overall, he averaged 18.2 points, 4.7 assists, 3.3 rebounds and 1.2 steals with 41/34/84 shooting splits across 21 games (19 starts).

Analysis
Brown profiles as a lead guard with the size and skill to develop into an elite offensive engine at the next level. He handles smoothly with either hand. His pull-up shot is quick, and his three-level scoring jumps off the page when he’s rolling. Brown shines in pick-and-roll, helping his teammates get easy buckets. He has active hands on defense. As his frame fills out and his shot selection sharpens, there’s plenty of pro upside.

Projection
Brown has All-Star potential, but it may take a few years for him to develop into a go-to playmaker like Brandon Roy or Keyonte George, who both made leaps after a couple years. Brown’s three-point prowess and ability to get downhill share similarities to Desmond Bane and CJ McCollum, and while Brown’s career would likely be considered a success if he winds up being a productive NBA starter, he’s a more advanced all-around prospect than either Bane or McCollum coming out of college. Brown’s offense will get him on the court early, but his efficiency as a scorer and facilitator will determine his upside.
