Get to Know Keaton Wagler

Keaton Wagler sits down with Lauren Green from NBA TV to discuss the NBA Draft.

Overview
Keaton Wagler was a four-star recruit who flew largely under the radar of elite programs coming out of high school. He burst onto the scene as a freshman at Illinois, averaging 17.9 points, 5.1 rebounds and 4.2 assists per game with 45/40/80 shooting splits. Wagler earned Big Ten Freshman of the Year honors and a spot on the Big Ten All-Freshman Team while establishing himself as one of the best players in the conference with a first-team All-Big Ten selection. His breakout 2026 season culminated in national recognition, as he was named a consensus second-team All-American and took home the Jerry West Award. Wagler scored 90 points during five NCAA Tournament games, leading the Illini to the Final Four.

Analysis
Wagler’s game is built on feel, craft and skill rather than raw athleticism. At 6-foot-6, he has excellent size for a guard, allowing him to shoot over defenders and see passing lanes. He has a smooth, quick-release jumper with elite range and is comfortable in spot-up situations or pulling up off the dribble. Not only is Wagler a high-volume scorer, but he also reads the floor with veteran-level poise, using head fakes and hesitations to create advantages. He’s thin and lacks elite burst, but he’ll fill out once he gets into an NBA weight room. Tall guards with Wagler’s shooting touch, basketball IQ and passing ability are rare, making him an intriguing lottery prospect.

Projection
Wagler isn’t the prospect Luka Doncic or Cade Cunningham were, but the Illinois product can play a similar half-court, heliocentric style. However, Wagler is also capable of playing off the ball, which should allow him to fit in wherever he lands. If Wagler doesn’t transform into an NBA superstar, he could still be a 10-year starter like CJ McCollum or a second-unit offensive fulcrum like Ty Jerome or Coby White.
