Overview
Jalen Washington arrived at Vanderbilt for his senior season after three years at North Carolina, where he flashed defensive tools while playing a limited role. He was the Tar Heels’ Defensive Player of the Year in 2024-25, averaging 5.7 points and 4.2 rebounds in 15.9 minutes while ranking second on the team in total blocks (30). Washington played a career-high 20.7 minutes per game during his lone season at Vanderbilt, averaging 8.9 points, 5.6 rebounds and 1.3 blocks on 56%/29%/74% shooting splits, earning a reputation as one of the SEC’s better interior defenders while showing improved technique around the rim.

Analysis
Washington’s calling card is his physical profile. At 6-foot-10 with a 7-foot-4 wingspan, he presents as a modern center who can protect the rim while staying out of foul trouble. He blocks shots with patience and timing rather than lunging, showing advanced instincts for a player who never saw substantial minutes. Washington is primarily a catch-and-finish big who does most of his damage in the short roll and on cuts, and while his three-point production didn’t stand out in college, he was more than willing to let it fly.

Projection
Washington is a draft-and-stash or two-way candidate whose upside is almost entirely defined by his defensive potential. At his best, Washington’s game resembles Onyeka Okongwu, though the latter was a more consistent and offensively polished prospect. If he lands in the right spot, Washington can evolve into a useful backup center on a team that values defensive versatility similar to Xavier Tillman, Thomas Bryant and Isaiah Stewart.
