Overview
Dillon Mitchell first turned national heads as the MVP of the 2022 Jordan Brand Classic, where he led all scorers with 18 points. That same spring, he earned selections to the McDonald’s All-American Game and the Nike Hoop Summit, cementing his status as a consensus five-star recruit and one of the top players in the 2022 class. After a standout senior year at Montverde Academy, he committed to Texas. He spent two seasons with the Longhorns, transferred to Cincinnati for his junior year, then landed at St. John’s as a senior, where he put together his most well-rounded college season. There, he posted 8.3 points, 7.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 1.3 steals in 28.2 minutes per game on shooting splits of 55.9%/6.7%/49.4%. The performance earned him the Big East All-Defensive Team, the All-Big East Third Team, the Big East All-Tournament Team and a spot on the NABC North Atlantic District Second Team.
Analysis
Mitchell’s most translatable NBA skill is his defense. His lateral quickness and quick feet let him switch onto shifty guards and stay in front of them, and his timing as a help-side rim protector makes him a disruptor in the passing lanes. His athleticism is rare. A 38.5-inch vertical makes him an instant lob threat and one of the most dangerous transition finishers in the country, where he outruns defenses and finishes above the rim. He cuts and was efficient around the basket, slipping into open windows after setting firm screens. And he took care of the ball while keeping the offense flowing as a connector. His perimeter shooting has room to grow, but his motor and vertical pop let him play bigger than his frame.
Projection
Mitchell projects as a high-energy frontcourt defender and play-finisher who impacts winning without ever needing the ball in his hands. His best path to minutes runs through switchable perimeter defense, help-side shot blocking, lob finishing in transition and the halfcourt and the connective passing he flashed as a senior. NBA comparisons to Mitchell can be made to players like Derrick Jones Jr. and Jordan Walsh.
