Overview
Dailyn Swain left Columbus Africentric Early College as the program’s all-time leading scorer with 1,509 points, a two-time Division III district Player of the Year and a first-team all-state selection who finished fourth in Ohio Mr. Basketball voting. He competed on the Nike EYBL circuit with All Ohio Red before signing with Xavier as a four-star recruit. An appendectomy cut his freshman season short, but he still earned Big East All-Freshman Team honors. As a sophomore, he stepped into a starting role and more than doubled his scoring output. Swain then transferred to Texas, where he thrived as a junior, averaging 17.3 points, 7.5 rebounds, 3.6 assists and 1.6 steals in 32.8 minutes per game on 54.2%/34.8%/81.3% shooting splits. He was named SEC Newcomer of the Year, earned Second-team All-SEC honors and was selected to the Julius Erving Award Midseason Top 10.
Analysis
Swain’s best trait is his ability to get to the rim and finish through contact. At 6’8″ and 225 pounds with long arms, he has the frame to absorb punishment at the next level. He also makes his free throws when he gets to the line. His midrange game is advanced, and he’s a good playmaker for his position. Swain also thrives in transition due to his finishing ability and athleticism. Defensively, he has active hands, allowing him to disrupt passing lanes and force mistakes. The three-point shot is still developing, but it improved each year of college, and his efficiency inside the arc and at the free throw line give him a high scoring floor regardless.
Projection
Swain projects as a two-way wing who can attack in the half court, push the ball in transition and make plays for teammates. His combination of size, touch around the basket, playmaking and defensive activity gives him a clear path to meaningful minutes from the start. NBA comparisons to Swain include Deni Avdija, Gordon Hayward and Jaime Jaquez Jr. Swain’s year-over-year development at every stop tells you he hasn’t hit his ceiling yet. More efficient perimeter shooting is the key to his upside at the NBA level.
