Overview
Braden Smith won Indiana’s Mr. Basketball award in 2022 after averaging 18.3 points, 6.0 rebounds and 6.0 assists while leading Westfield High School to its first sectional championship in 105 years. A three-star recruit who committed to Purdue, Smith started all 149 games of his college career and developed into one of the most decorated point guards in NCAA history. As a senior, he averaged 14.3 points, 3.5 rebounds, 8.8 assists and 1.7 steals in 34.5 minutes per game on 44.0%/36.2%/82.5% shooting splits. Smith broke Bobby Hurley’s 33-year-old NCAA career assists record during the first round of the 2026 NCAA Tournament, finishing with 1,103 for his career. He also set the NCAA four-year record for career minutes played at 5,067. A two-time consensus First-Team All-American, Bob Cousy Award winner and Big Ten Player of the Year recipient, Smith capped his senior season by earning Big Ten Tournament MVP honors after setting the tournament’s single-game, single-tournament and career assist records.

Career Highlights

  • NCAA Division I career assists leader (1,103); ranked second nationally in APG in each of his final three seasons.
  • Only player in NCAA Division I history to total at least 1,500 career points, 1,000 assists and 500 rebounds.
  • Two-time consensus All-America First Team selection (2024-25, 2025-26).
  • Finalist for the John R. Wooden Award twice (2024-25, 2025-26) and Naismith Trophy once (2024-25).
  • Named Bob Cousy Point Guard of the Year and Big Ten Player of the Year as a junior in 2024-25.

Analysis
Smith is a floor general, and he does it cleanly, maintaining one of the best assist-to-turnover ratios in the country while carrying a massive playmaking burden. He reads pick-and-rolls, delivers pocket passes and finds shooters on the weakside. His speed gets him into the teeth of the defense, and when opponents go under screens, he punishes them with a pull-up jumper. Off the ball, Smith is a proven catch-and-shoot threat. His long wingspan and active hands make him a disruptive presence in passing lanes. Smith is more effective as a midrange and perimeter scorer than a rim attacker, but his craft, touch and feel compensate for his physical limitations around the basket.

Projection
Smith projects as an offensive organizer who can run a second unit and grow into a bigger rotational role. His playmaking volume, turnover avoidance, pull-up shooting and steal generation fit a clear archetype of smaller guards who have carved out long NBA careers. He can draw comparisons to NBA players like Cam Spencer, Greivis Vasquez and Darren Collison. Smith’s basketball IQ, four years of high-level production and proven ability to make everyone around him better could earn him minutes quickly, and his shooting versatility gives him a real path to sticking on a playoff roster.
