About John Petty
• John Petty is a capable jump shooter with good size who has rounded out his game over his four seasons at Alabama making notable strides on the defensive end as a senior. Widely regarded as one of the top-30 prospects in the high school class of 2017, Petty earned a spot at the Jordan Brand Classic following his senior year at Jemison High School (AL). Averaging double-figures as a true freshman, Petty made some incremental strides as a sophomore, but seemed to turn a corner under first-year Head Coach Nate Oats as a junior. Averaging 12.6 points, 5.2 rebounds, and 1.9 assists per game as a senior, the Huntsville native earned All-SEC 1st Team honors while helping the Crimson Tide to their first Sweet Sixteen appearance since 2004.
• Standing 6’6 with a lanky 184-pound frame and a 6’9 wingspan, Petty has good size for a wing but has room to get stronger. He is a fluid athlete who can above the rim pretty impressively in space.
• A microwave scorer whose game evolved over time at the college level, Petty did much of his damage as a set shooter in Alabama’s pace-and-space offense, but also showed growth as a pull-up jump shooter and passer as an upperclassman.
• Competing with good energy, chipping in on the glass, and effecting opposing jump shooters with his length, Petty had some nice moments defensively as a senior—particularly on the ball.
Advanced Stats
• Playing primarily off the ball on the wings last season, Petty spent much of his time hunting shots on the perimeter. Providing valuable floor spacing, he shot the ball at a very high level for stretches but was not quite as reliable as he was during his breakout junior season.
• Long known for his jump shooting ability, Petty got nearly half of his shots in spot up situations and scored 1.05 points per catch and shoot jump shot in the half court [71st percentile] shooting the ball with a quick, consistent release and showing the ability to run very hot for stretches over the last two years. Making shots off screens and off the dribble with some consistency as well, Petty had several big games across his four seasons at Alabama.
• Creating around a quarter of his shots off the dribble in isolation and pick and roll situations, Petty is not the most dynamic ball handler, but the threat of his jumper opened up some driving lanes for him last season. Scoring 1.03 points per shot around the rim in the half court [34th percentile], he is a long-strider who can play above the rim in transition and catch lobs. He settles for some difficult floaters and has room to become more physical initiating contact as he gets stronger.
• An improving passer, Petty showed some ability to find the open man in limited opportunities handling the ball.
Defensive Analysis
• Possessing solid tools and a good motor on the defensive end, Petty held his own containing the ball last season. He made an effort to chip in on the glass and get in the passing lanes, but took better angles when off the ball on some possessions than others.
• His ability to get stronger remains a point of interest as it could give him the versatility to defend bigger forwards.
