'Be The People' joins NBA at NBA Cares All-Star Day of Service, helping L.A. rebuild after wildfires

'Be The People' was on the ground for the 18th annual NBA Cares All-Star Day of Service in Los Angeles.

LOS ANGELESBe The People, an emerging movement that connects community problem solvers with millions of Americans ready to do their part, was on the ground Friday, February 13, as NBA Cares and Habitat for Humanity hosted the 18th annual NBA Cares All-Star Day of Service in Los Angeles. The event brought together more than 500 volunteers to support communities rebuilding after the 2025 wildfires.

“The NBA, along with its teams, players, and fans have a long history of working together to support and strengthen communities,” said Kathy Behrens, NBA President of Social Responsibility & Player Programs. “By bringing the NBA family together to participate in our annual NBA Cares Day of Service, we hope that we can inspire and encourage people to participate in volunteer service projects that leave a positive impact in their community.”

At the Day of Service, Be The People National Leadership Council members NBA, Habitat for Humanity, and Stand Together collaborated with volunteers and the L.A. Clippers, Comcast NBCUniversal, Nike, and Baby2Baby to build wall-frame home structures and assemble essential kits for families in need. The wall frames will become part of permanent homes for households affected by the Eaton and Palisades fires as part of ReBUILD LA, Habitat for Humanity of Greater Los Angeles’s multi-year effort to help low- to moderate-income households recover after the wildfires.

“Bringing people together is part of our mission statement in service of building not just homes, but also communities and hope,” said Jonathan Reckford, CEO of Habitat for Humanity International. “So many families are still recovering after last year’s fires, and today is about showing up in a hands-on way to help restore hope. We see every day how people from all walks of life contribute to strengthening their communities when they come together, and we’re excited to be part of this ten-year effort to invite millions more to get involved and expand the impact of what’s already happening.”

“I’m committed to helping others rise. That’s why I wanted to be a part of the NBA Cares All-Star Day of Service,” said Grammy-nominated and multi-platinum artist Aloe Blacc, a member of the Be The People National Leadership Council who participated in the Los Angeles event Friday. Aloe is part of the Altadena community where his kids’ school was destroyed and thousands of homes burned in the Eaton fire. “We’re showing that people in communities across the country are there for each other and inviting everyone to come together and do their part to solve even the toughest problems.”

“The NBA has a unique ability to bring people together,” said Brian Hooks, Chairman and CEO of Stand Together, a philanthropic community and NBA social impact partner that helps America’s boldest changemakers tackle the root causes of our country’s biggest problems. “When you pair the NBA and its extraordinary platform with partners like Habitat for Humanity and others who have deep roots in the communities they serve, it’s an opportunity to help many more people get involved to make a meaningful difference.”

Last month on Martin Luther King Day, Be The People, State Farm Arena, Stand Together and the Atlanta Hawks launched Atlanta Changemakers to celebrate Atlanta’s legacy of community leadership and civic impact. It kicked off by honoring Martin Luther King III and Arndrea Waters King as the first Atlanta Changemaker and visionaries behind Realize the Dream—an initiative that aims to facilitate 100 million hours of service by what would have been Dr. King’s 100th birthday in 2029. The Kings are also founding members of Be The People’s National Leadership Council. Fans are invited to nominate changemakers who will then be announced at Hawks games in March and April.

At the heart of these events is a powerful message: If we want a country of the people, by the people, for the people, it’s up to each of us to play our part–it’s up to each of us to Be The People.
