Overview

Sandfort attended Waukee High School in Iowa where he played basketball and golf. He was rated as a three-star recruit and committed to playing for Iowa. Sandfort saw limited playing time as a freshman but saw his role increase as a sophomore. In 2022-23, he averaged 10.3 points, 4.1 rebounds and 1.5 assists in 20.6 minutes across 33 appearances and was named Big Ten Sixth Man of the Year. As a junior, Sandfort transitioned into a full-time starter and increased his averages to 16.4 points, 6.6 rebounds and 2.7 assists in 30.4 minutes over 34 games. For his efforts, Sandfort was named Third-Team All-Big Ten by the coaches and media.

Analysis

Sandfort’s greatest strength is his outside shooting ability, as he converted 37.9 percent of his 7.3 three-point attempts per contest last season. At 6-foot-6, he is able to shoot over smaller defenders and is adept at shooting on the move after flying off of screens. Sandfort is also able to leverage his gravity by setting up his teammates for open looks.

Projection

Sandfort’s game is similar to that of Duncan Robinson and Gary Trent Jr. due to their shared ability to convert long-range shots at a high clip while primarily working off the ball. With three-point shooting reigning supreme in the NBA, Sandfort’s marksman potential is a valuable skill set that could allow him to carve out a role at the next level.
